One of the main reasons thousands of Europeans relocate to the Costa Blanca is the affordable cost of living combined with high quality of life. Our team at Granfield Estate has been living on the Costa Blanca for years, and these numbers come from our own daily experience. Here you can live comfortably on a budget that would barely cover a modest existence in Scandinavia, the UK, or Germany. But "affordable" is a relative term. How much does life actually cost in 2026?
In this article, we provide real figures for every expense category: rent, utilities, groceries, transport, healthcare, and leisure. All prices are current for the Torrevieja — Orihuela Costa — Guardamar area, which is one of the most affordable zones on the coast.
Rent: From €500 for an Apartment
Long-Term Rental (12+ Months)
Long-term rental is the most economical option. Prices in 2026:
| Property Type | Torrevieja Centre | Orihuela Costa | Guardamar |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio | €400-550 | €450-600 | €400-500 |
| 1 bedroom | €500-700 | €550-750 | €450-650 |
| 2 bedrooms | €600-850 | €650-900 | €550-800 |
| 3 bedrooms | €750-1,100 | €800-1,200 | €700-1,000 |
| Villa/townhouse | €900-1,500 | €1,000-2,000 | €800-1,400 |
Prices depend on proximity to the sea, property condition, and whether there's a pool. A 2-bedroom apartment 10 minutes from the beach runs €650-800; the same on the beachfront costs €800-1,000.

What's Included and Not Included in Rent
Rent typically includes: comunidad (building maintenance), rubbish collection (basura). Not included: electricity, water, gas, internet. These are paid separately — see the "Utilities" section below.
Utilities: €100-180 Per Month
| Service | Apartment (2 people) | Villa (4 people) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electricity | €50-90 | €80-150 | Biggest expense, AC in summer |
| Water | €15-25 | €25-50 | Garden irrigation increases usage |
| Gas (canister) | €15-20 | €15-20 | Butano, lasts 1-2 months |
| Internet + mobile | €30-50 | €30-50 | Fibre + mobile bundle |
| Total | €110-185 | €150-270 |
Electricity — The Biggest Expense
Electricity in Spain is more expensive than in many European countries. Tariffs are divided into three time zones: valle (night, cheapest), llano (morning/evening), punta (daytime, most expensive). Running your washing machine and dishwasher at night, and setting AC to 24-25°C instead of 20°C are the main ways to save.
In summer, air conditioning adds €30-50 to your bill. In winter, most apartments don't have central heating (radiators aren't standard) — if needed, residents use electric heaters or AC in heating mode.
Internet
Fibre optic is available almost everywhere on the Costa Blanca. Major providers: Movistar, Orange, Vodafone, MásMóvil, Digi. A "600 Mbps internet + mobile with 20 GB" bundle costs €30-45 per month. Digi is the most budget-friendly (from €20) but coverage is 4G only.
Groceries: €300-500 for Two People
Groceries in Spain are noticeably cheaper than in Northern Europe. Main supermarkets on the Costa Blanca:
- Mercadona — Spain's largest chain, best value for money
- Lidl — German discounter, lowest prices on basics
- Aldi — similar to Lidl, good selection
- Consum — Valencian chain, slightly pricier but quality local products
- Carrefour — hypermarket, wide range of imported goods
Prices for Key Products (March 2026)
| Product | Price | Cheapest At |
|---|---|---|
| Bread (loaf) | €0.70-1.20 | Mercadona |
| Milk (1 litre) | €0.85-1.10 | Lidl |
| Chicken breast (1 kg) | €5.50-7.50 | Lidl/Mercadona |
| Pork (1 kg) | €4.50-7.00 | Mercadona |
| Olive oil (1 litre) | €7.00-10.00 | Mercadona (Hacendado) |
| Tomatoes (1 kg) | €1.50-2.50 | Market/Lidl |

| Wine (bottle) | €2.50-5.00 | Mercadona/Lidl |
| Beer (0.33 l, 6-pack) | €2.50-4.00 | Lidl |
Local markets (mercado municipal) are excellent for fresh fruit, vegetables, fish, and seafood. In Torrevieja, the street market runs every Friday, and the municipal fish market operates daily at the port.

Public healthcare quality on the Costa Blanca is good; Hospital Universitario de Torrevieja is one of the best in the region.

For those not working in Spain (retirees, investors, remote workers), private health insurance is available:

FAQ
How much money do you need per month for a comfortable life on the Costa Blanca?
For a couple, €1,800-2,200 per month ensures a comfortable life: a nice apartment, regular dining out, a car, and insurance. For a modest single life, €1,000-1,200 is sufficient.
Where is cheaper — Torrevieja or Orihuela Costa?
Torrevieja is cheaper for rent and daily expenses (more shops, markets to choose from). Orihuela Costa is pricier for rent (more new builds and urbanisations with pools) but the infrastructure is more "European". The difference is 10-20% in Torrevieja's favour.
How much has the cost of living increased in recent years?
Since 2022, prices have risen 15-25% depending on the category. The biggest increases have been in rent (+20-30%) and electricity (+15-20%). Groceries have risen moderately (+10-15%). Nonetheless, the Costa Blanca remains one of the most affordable regions in Mediterranean Europe.
Do I need to pay taxes if I live on the Costa Blanca?
If you spend more than 183 days per year in Spain, you become a tax resident and pay income tax (IRPF). The rate is progressive: from 19% (up to €12,450) to 47% (above €300,000). EU pensioners should check the tax treaty between Spain and the country paying their pension.
