San Juan de Alicante is where the city goes to live. It sits just north of Alicante, behind the seven-kilometre sweep of Playa de San Juan, and it is one of the few places on this coast where the residents are overwhelmingly Spanish and permanent rather than seasonal.

The beach is the reason. Playa de San Juan is wide, sandy and gently shelving, with a promenade that runs its full length and a tram line into central Alicante behind it. At the northern end the coast turns rocky at Cabo Huertas, a low headland of pine, small coves and the most sought-after addresses in the area — plots here are large, and many houses have the sea in view.
Property is mainly detached villas and town houses, with apartments closer to the promenade. This is a city suburb rather than a holiday urbanisation: the university hospital, the international schools and the golf course at Alicante Golf are all within a few minutes, and everything stays open through the winter.
Alicante city centre is fifteen minutes by tram, the airport around twenty-five by car. For buyers who want the coast without giving up a working city around them, this is the obvious place to look.
