Ski resorts in Spain

Snow-covered Spanish ski resort slopes with chairlift and alpine village

Spain is not only stunning beaches and cities full of sights; it also has a well-developed winter tourism scene and, therefore, plenty of ski resorts. Granfield Estate presents the best places in Spain where you can conquer mountain slopes and enjoy a real snowy winter.

At Granfield Estate, our team loves the fact that you can surf in the morning and ski in the afternoon — the Spanish mountains are closer than most people think.

There are no Siberian-style freezes in Spain: temperatures rarely drop below about -10°C, but sudden warm spells are quite common. To deal with this, all slopes are equipped with snow cannons that can cover the runs with artificial snow whenever necessary. Not only is the climate milder in Spain; the ski runs are generally less extreme and prices are more affordable than in many neighbouring European countries.

The ski season usually starts in late November or mid-December, which means you can already start planning a trip using our shortlist.

1. Sierra Nevada

The southernmost ski resort in Europe is located near Granada. It is the most popular ski destination for residents of the province of Alicante (from Torrevieja, for example, it is about a four-hour drive). The mountain range here is the highest on mainland Spain, and the slopes add up to around 100 km. The 6 km-long Aguila run is considered one of the best in the country. Sierra Nevada is just an hour’s drive from the Mediterranean coast, making it one of the few places in the world where you can ski in the morning and evening and relax on the beach during the day. The resort has nurseries and childcare facilities, so your children will be in safe hands while you enjoy the slopes. The season runs until 1 May 2023.

2. Benasque

If you prefer cross-country skiing to downhill, this is the place for you. Located in the Posets–Maladeta nature reserve in the Spanish Pyrenees, Benasque is perfect for peaceful, scenic ski outings. There are routes of varying difficulty that wind through picturesque oak, birch and beech forests.

It is particularly appealing to thrill-seekers, as it features a run with a 37% gradient. Skiers praise the quality of the snow and the atmospheric architecture of the local villages, with stone-and-wood houses and beautiful Romanesque churches. Here too, the season runs until 10 April 2023.

6. Navacerrada

Located just 52 km from the country’s capital, Navacerrada is the closest ski resort to Madrid. It is divided into two areas: the upper one, with runs of medium and high difficulty, and the lower one, with intermediate-level slopes. The resort also has a slalom stadium and a ski jump.

7. Formigal

Fans of this ski area highlight its excellent snow conditions, and its location close to Zaragoza, Pamplona and several French towns makes it very popular. There are dedicated areas for young skiers and facilities where younger children can be looked after. The ski season here runs until 9 April 2023.

8. Valgrande-Pajares

If you want to discover a less well-known but no less attractive part of Spain, in Asturias you will find a resort with 25 km of slopes just an hour’s drive from Oviedo and León. It is particularly suitable for beginners: the slopes are gentle and, at the same time, you avoid the crowds found in larger resorts.

There are more than a dozen ski resorts in Spain, all of them well equipped and ideal for lovers of active winter holidays. And once you have had your fill of skiing and adrenaline, you can enjoy walks through snowy forests, sledging, spa hotels, and cosy bars and restaurants serving excellent Spanish food and wine.
